Brought to you by The Eerie Horror Fest-

My Fellow Americans,

I would like to put yet another Internet rumor to rest by saying that I am in fact running for President of the United States. This is not a “PR stunt” or a “joke”, and I am not simply “pretending to run to politically rouse my demographic”. Nor am I running under the character name of Captain Spaulding. I, Sid Haig, am running for President. That is a fact.

I have stated in the past that my hopes of winning are slim at best, but the only way we the people can send a message to Washington DC is for me to get at least 1% of the vote, not to be taken as a “joke”. Treating this country as a joke is what got us where we are in the first place, isn’t it? It’s time to stop that.

We can do this, if you all register to vote and then write my name in as your choice for President. It’s very simple. Just write it in. That’s it.

An overwhelming number of you have said that you agree with my position on taxes, health care, immigration and all the rest of the many things that we find wrong with the way the current administration is handling things, and I appreciate that. But to take that fire and snuff it by just laughing it off is counterproductive and will change nothing for any of us Americans.

If any of you really agree and “would vote for me if I was really running”, then now’s your chance to make your voice heard, because this is 100% real.

I hope this clears up any misconceptions about my campaign.

Vote Sid Haig in 08′.

- Sid

In this speech, Sid gets tough with politics. Included are his viewpoints on immigration, earmarks, the economy, marijuana, the war, and global warming and more.

John McCain said this today in Rochester, New Hampshire: “This is a clear choice that the American people have. I had the courage and the judgment to say I would rather lose a political campaign than lose a war. It seems to me that Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign.”

This is the ninth presidential campaign I’ve covered. I can’t remember a more scurrilous statement by a major party candidate. It smacks of desperation. It renews questions about whether McCain has the right temperament for the presidency. How sad.

Scurrility Update: Readers should note that I said that I can’t remember a more scurrilous statement by a major party candidate. Smart politicians leave the scurrilous stuff to their aides; in fact, a McCain spokesman expressed these words almost exactly on July 14. There is a reason why politicians who want to be President don’t say these sort of things: It isn’t presidential. A President exists in the straitjacket of literality. His words mean something. So John McCain has to literally believe that Barack Obama would “rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign.” I can’t imagine that he does. He popped off, out of frustration.

The reality is that neither Barack Obama nor Nouri al-Maliki nor most anybody else believes that the Iraq war can be “lost” at this point. The reality is that no matter who is elected President, we are looking at a residual U.S. force of 30-50,000 by 2011 (a year ahead of the previous schedule). The reality is that McCain should be proud that he helped salvage a disastrous situation by pushing the counterinsurgency plan. It’s something to run on. But, at this point, McCain must sense that it’s not a winning hand. Obama, the poker player, has drawn to an inside straight: the Iraqis favor his plan over McCain’s long-term bases. That must be galling. But it’s no excuse to pop off the way McCain did. It was, shockingly, unpresidential.
http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/07/mccain_meltdown.html
During an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), CBS Evening News host Katie Couric noted that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) said recently that “there might have been improved security [in Iraq] even without the surge” and asked McCain, “What’s your response to that?”
After first calling Obama’s claim “a false depiction of what actually happened,” McCain proceeded to falsely claim that the surge “began the Anbar awakening”:

McCAIN: I don’t know how you respond to something that is such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel McFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that’s just a matter of history.

But in a puzzling move, the CBS Evening News did not actually televise McCain’s false claim tonight. As MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann reported, “CBS curiously, to say the least, left it on the edit room floor. It aired Katie Couric’s question, but in response, it inserted part of McCain’s answer to another question instead.”

When asked “Would you be comfortable with nuclear waste coming through Arizona, you know, going through Phoenix on its way to Yucca Mountain?” John McCain’s answer was clear: “No I would not.”

But through your state — that’s a different story. He’s been a consistent supporter of storing waste at Yucca Mountain. In 1998, John McCain even voted in favor of shipping nuclear waste from New England to Texas. For his support the electric utility and Nuclear power industry has rewarded McCain with more than half a million dollars in campaign contributions.
Nuclear Power

McCain Has Accepted Over One Half A Million From The Electric Utility Industry, Nuclear Power Industry. According to a Public Campaign Action Fund analysis of campaign finance data provided by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics Center, John McCain received $558, 365 in campaign contributions from the electric utility industry, which includes the nuclear power industry since 1989.
    * McCain Agreed “Nuclear Power Should Be Greatly Expanded.” McCain, along with the rest of the Republican presidential candidates, “agree that nuclear power should be greatly expanded.” [New York Times, 10/17/07]

Nuclear Waste: Okay For Nevada, Not For Arizona

McCain Said He Would Not Be Comfortable With Nuclear Waste Being Transported To Yucca Going Through Arizona. In an interview in Las Vegas, Senator McCain advocated for the storage of nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain. When asked “What about the transportation? Would you be comfortable with nuclear waste coming through Arizona, you know, going through Phoenix on its way to Yucca Mountain?” McCain: “No I would not.” [McCain Interview, Accessed 4/3/08]

McCain Supports Nuclear Storing Nuclear Waste In Yucca Mountain:

    * McCain Said He Supported Yucca in Senate in 2002. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, “[McCain] says ‘I think we have to have a place to store the waste. I think that nuclear power has got to be a vital part of our effort to be independent of foreign oil, and I think it’s (Yucca Mountain) a suitable place for storage.’ McCain said he had not been convinced that the site isn’t safe or that transporting the waste to the site was unduly dangerous.” [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/7/07]

    * McCain Has Been Consistent In His Support For Storing Nuclear Waste Within Yucca Mountain. The Las Vegas Sun reported, “John McCain has been consistent in his support for storing nuclear waste within Yucca Mountain. He has said publicly that tough decisions regarding nuclear waste have to be made and that storing nuclear waste over many different states is a larger national threat than storing all the waste at Yucca Mountain. He supports going forward with building more nuclear power plants and believes storing waste inside Yucca Mountain will streamline that cause.” [Las Vegas Sun Voters Guide, Accessed 7/28/08]

    * McCain Voted to Dump Nuclear Waste at Yucca Mountain. In 2002, McCain voted for a motion to proceed to the resolution which, pursuant to the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, approves of the site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada for the development of a repository for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Nuclear Energy Institute was “the nuclear power industry’s trade association, representing 260 corporations in 15 countries. NEI is reportedly the mastermind behind the Alliance for Sound Nuclear Policy, a coalition of pro-nuclear groups.” [S.J. Res 34, Vote #167, 7/09/02]

McCain Voted In Favor Of Shipping Nuclear Waste From New England To Texas. In 1998, McCain voted in favor of legislation granting Congressional consent to an agreement allowing Maine and Vermont to send low-level radioactive waste to a dump site in Texas. The conference report passed 78-15. [H.R. 629, Vote #255, 9/2/1998]
