Why do individuals donate thousands of dollars to a political campaign?

Pretty much what I am asking is what do the donators have to gain. Of course they want the person they are donating to to win, but is that the only reason? If someone could possibly highlight some of the main reasons thatd be awsome.
Future access…..
That’s why many companies donate to BOTH candidates – so they have access via their lobbyists no matter who wins.
Remember – it’s all about the money and power.

There’s a limit on how much an individual can donate. I’ve donated to Obama’s campaign because I want him to win.

I donated 25 bucks to McCain and I’m broke as hell so its like thousands of dollars kind of. I just really want him to win and i would feel horrible if he were only $25 short of putting out the ad that squashes Obama for good. lol

I agree with all previous users, and in addition think they should do away with that. It’s rather crooked.

Many don’t!
They just let bundlers use their names and addresses.

It’s all about access. They gain access to their elected officials. They also get the elected officials to feel indebted to them because of the donations, so they are more likely to listen to their biggest donors.
