Nobodies perfect so is politics exclusively controlled by smear campaigns if not tell me any reason why not. Also how can anyone have honor in a campaign like that and if they tell the truth about everything what do you think would really happen to them? Instead of the usually deniability if a political person told only the truth about everything what do you think would happen?
In an ideal world, we would ban smear campaigns and force the candidates to state their true positions. But we don’t live in an ideal world. As for me, the more a candidate badmouths another, the more certain I am that I won’t vote for him or her.
If each told the truth about everything, nobody would get elected.

There are several reasons why these types of campaigns aren’t illegal. First making them illegal would be a violation of freedom of speech.
Secondly, candidates use these campaigns because they are effective, for whatever reason people seem to remember a negative ad, this is an increasing trend in candidate centered campigns. Poltical campaigns have nothing to with honor, they never have and probably never will.
Truth in politics? These two concepts are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
