I am trying to find out what happens to excess campaign contributions when a Presidential Candidate drops out.

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by admin

For example…If Fred Thompson was to drop out of the running, had raised 10 mil, spent 5mil on campaing signs and buttons. What happens to the left over 5 mil? Is it donated to the national fund to be used by the final party candidate or does Fred get to keep it and "thanks for running".

He can donate it to charity or another candidate. He can also save it for possible future campaign. He cannot use funds for private applications.

From what I understand is that they can almost do what they want with it or use if for future campains which is what Hillary did.

It is the candidate’d discretion what to do with the money, but it must be used for political purposes.

They will donate to charity or to another candidate, or they can save it for future campaigns. When Edwards pulled out in 04 he used his extra money to help fund the Kerry/Edwards ticket later on.

Depends on their future and/or current profession. Normally the money goes to the politician’s war chest for future campaigns. In Fred Thompson’s case it’s really up to him and his campaign what happens to the money. Sometimes it does go into the general party fund but it doesn’t have too.
